Statement of Purpose
I'm a Japanese Language and Culture major at CSU Monterey Bay. I have plans to study abroad in Japan in the near future and use the experience to further my understanding of the language and culture.
I have a strong fascination with Japan since elementary school. As the years went by the drive to learn about the language and culture grew to the point that I knew I wanted my future career to be centered around it. It was early on in my high school years when I knew that I wanted to go to CSU Monterey Bay for its Japanese department, because I knew what doors it could open for me.
I knew I had made the right choice within the first week of starting CSUMB. After years of attempting at self-teaching and two years of community level Japanese, my class had touch on more topics and grammar points than I had ever studied before. I can see how much of my Japanese has grown over the weeks since school has started and I know my goal of becoming fluent in the language is now achievable.
When telling people that my major is Japanese, I always get the question of "what kind of career can you get with that?" What comes to mind first is never a lot, either translation or teaching, I have come to understand that there is a lot a person can do. Although, for me my passion goes to teaching Japanese. I truly love language and I want to share with other people who want to learn it. The feeling of helping people understand a subject is wonderful and it is even more so for myself when it something that I am very passionate about. Thus, after CSUMB I would love to spread my passion for the language through teaching.
