Intermediate Low Speaking and Listening
Description:
Using audiovisual teaching materials, practice exchanging conversation in familiar scenes through daily life in Japan and role play of university life scenes etc. There will speeches and presentations.
Units: 2
Course Reflective Narrative:
Intermediate Low Speaking and Listening was completed in in Spring 2016 at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. Like Intermediate Low Writing, this course also covers MLO1 Language and Communication and MLO2 Culture. This course fulfills these MLO's, because it is taught in Japanese, by teaching about appropriate behavior and what to say in different situations while in Japan. Also by learning the reason why some words are said in certain situations, we learn about some of Japan's culture, believes and values. This course was designed so that all the assignments were done in class. However, there were a few homework assignment for when we were not able to finish in class (see Homework). Since this class met twice a week, one day would focus on speaking and the next day would focus on listening skills. On the days that would focus on speaking skills, the class would go over the situation from the textbook, what not to do, and then role play. On the listening days, would to play games to see if we could hear the differences between words with long vowels and short vowels, or listen to dialogues and reenact them (See In-class Listening Assingment). This course also had two exams, a midterm and a final, which incorporated both listening and speaking parts. Since returning home from Japan, I have notice that my listening and speaking skill have declined some because of the lack of being immersed in the culture and my confidences in myself have decreased. Thus, I would like to working on these abilities by listening to more music, watching Japanese TV shows and talking more to friends.
