Course Reflective Narrative:
This course fulfills the Major Learning Outcome 1: Language and Communication by having the students communicate in Japanese on Service Learning outcomes of social justice, equal educations opportunities, the World Readiness Standards, cultural ethics, diversity and multiculturalism within a school's settings. Throughout the course, we were required to reflect on both articles and our experience during service learning while relating to the Service Learning outcomes (see Reading Reflection). We then used what we had learned from the weekly reflection in various projects and presentations in Japanese. For example, for our Community Scan project, we we conducted a survey of the the area around the school we were working at, and discussed various aspects of the community. One thing we looked the what ethnic groups made up the area, if students had access to places outside of school (Playgrounds, library, etc), and what the school had to offer its students. We analyzed these points to see how how it affects social justice issues, such as opportunities in educations, access to foreign language and culture courses, access to after school programs. We, also, discussed how the after school program that we worked with helped to solve these issues by given the students a place to be after school hours, where they can do homework, play games and be safe, rather than many of them going home alone (see Community Scan project).
Another assignment we did was our midterm and final presentation we discussed the activities and content of the lesson we gave at our site and reflected on our experience in relation to the outcomes of this course (see Site Reflection). In these presentations, we discussed the lessons that went well and the ones that didn't (see Midterm). We also looked at how, we managed the class and dealt with issues that came up. Lastly, we looked at what we learn and gained from service learning as a whole and what contributions we gave to students in our class. The Final Project was similar to the midterm, however, we were to reflect on the entire semester and what lessons we gave (see Final Presentation). The last assignment, the final paper, combine the final project with the site reflections while also analyzing the Service Learning outcomes (see Final Paper).
This course has taught me how work in both a social and professional setting as I taught lessons on Japanese culture. Additionally, I feel that I was able to communicate on a higher level of Japanese with all the presentations and the final paper on various issues within our community. My goals for after this course, is to continue to study the issues within our society and how people can become more aware of them through foreign language education. I would like to achieve this by researching how foreign language education working towards spreading greater awareness and understanding in not just the United States but in other countries as well.
