Course Reflective Narrative:
This course fulfills the Major Learning Outcome 1: Language and Communication by having the students write and discuss and present on various topics in Intermediate-High Japanese. Through the online homework assignment, we learn new grammar points and how to use them in various topics and receive feedback on how we can improve our Japanese. One project that was assigned was a group presentation about Japan’s population issues and what solutions we could apply to fix the issue. My group’s topic focused on the declining birth rates and the solutions we created (see Japan's Birth Rate Script and Japan's Birth Rate Presentation). This course had topics that I have never seen in a Japanese Language class, such as Japan’s geography and population. For example, during another presentation we were assigned, we had to research in Japanese, an earthquake in Japan (see Earthquake Presentation). We had to find out the magnitude, where is located, the damages, and safety measures that region is taking. These topics were interesting to learn, but they also helped improved my Japanese by giving me the ability to critically think about them and discuss them in Japanese. I would like to continue to improve my study of Japanese by expanding my knowledge on different topics that are usually not taught in classes and following up topics, such as the birth rate issue and life expectancy.
