~Japanese Society (Taken in Japan)
~Japanese Culture (Taken in Japan)
~Shamisen (Taken in Japan)
~Intermediate Low Speaking and Listening (Taken in Japan)
~Intermediate Low Writing (Taken in Japan)
~Intermediate Low Grammar (Taken in Japan)
Reflective Narrative:
5.1: From Fall 2015 to Spring 2016, I was able to study at Ritsumeikan in Kyoto Japan. I took several language courses, two culture course and one traditional art course while there. During my second semester, the language courses I took were Intermediate low level grammar, writing, and speaking and listening, which were also taught in Japanese. Living in Japan, really helped with reinforcing the lessons taught, as I could use what i learning while shopping, traveling and just talking with the locals. The two culture classes I took, brought a new perspective and understanding of Japan's culture and society, as these course focused on topics that are not normally focused on in other culture courses. For example in the Japanese Society course discussed topics such as social class, gender, and minorities in depth. For me these topics, were completely new and I have never had the chance to study. The last course I took that for me, I feel that really demonstrate that I had actively immersed myself into Japan's culture, was the shamisen course (a three stringed traditional instrument). This course as well was taught in Japanese by professional shamisen player and the class the well in one of the traditional townhouses in the Gion District, well known for the many Maiko and Geiko preform and live there. With the shamisen course I felt the most immersed in Japan, and I felt lucky to be able to learn an instrument I love and desperately want to play. While there, I maintained a blog, which that documented several key moments for me while living in Japan that was created in the Maximizing Study Abroad course. Another project of this course, that was maintained while in Japan, was the LESCANT photo project. For this project, we were to take photo and analyzed them bases on one of the following categories; Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Non-Verbal and Time. Both the blog and LESCANT helped me internalized my experience a bit more than probably would have.
