MLO 4: Research and Technology
4.1. Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2. Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3. Students collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses Taken:
~JAPN 403: Pre-Capstone
~WLC 400: Major Capstone
Reflective Narrative:
4.1: In both the Pre-Capstone and the Major Capstone courses, we researched our topic through the internet using various databases. Through these courses, CSUMB librarian came to our class to teach us how to use the university's database, how to use the inter-library loan system, how to properly make citations and bibliography. The Pre-Capstone, in particular, was the most useful in learning the basics and then applying them for the rest of the Capstone project.
4.2: Because of my groups topic, which is the roles of culture as motivation in foreign language studies, we had to research Japanese language and culture often. We looked at Japan's English education system and how they teach American/English culture in classes, which is not a lot, and several research paper that looked at how using cultural item within a lesson keeps student motivated and engaged during class time.
4.3: While the Pre-Capstone course focused on learning how to conduct research, the Major Capstone course was about putting all the research together and organizing it into the final product. During this course, each group conducted a survey to collect data on their topic, continued our research from the previous course to create a paper and presentation. For my group's topic, we made our survey through Google Form and distributed to student at CSUMB. While doing this, we worked on the Literature Review, where we looked at the foreign language education history in Japan and in the Untied States and, as well as, what kind of motivation is used to keep students wanting to study a new language.
